HELPFUL HINTS

If you are unsure on how to prepare/preserve your animals prior to taxidermy, just give me a call – I’d be happy to answer your questions.

  1. Caping deer, elk, moose, sheep & antelope are all the same
  2. Get your trophy to the taxidermist or stored properly in a freezer as soon as possible.  If you want to show your friends, come back in a day and pick up your antlers.  Remember, the hide must be taken care of.
  3. Good measurements are very helpful for full mounts.  These are the four basic measurements needed:
    1. Nose to tail base
    2. Around the chest
    3. Around the neck
    4. Nose to eye

INSTRUCTIONS FOR CAPING A DEER

STEP 1

STEP 2

STEP 2

At a point behind the shoulder and about halfway across the ribcage make a cut in the hide around the entire body.  Remember, a taxidermist can always cut off excess hide, but you can’t add back what isn’t there!

If you are not taking your cape to the taxidermist right away, you should be able to roll it up and put it in the freezer.  If you have any questions, give us a call.
